Sevenoaks AC Handicap 10 July 2018

Jim Knight had his best run for ten years to win the seventh race of the Sevenoaks AC 2018 handicap series. Sixty-seven-year-old Knight, now running with two artificial hips, is just beginning to recover some of his old form. In a race in which slightly cooler weather after the heat wave helped no fewer than twenty runners to beat their handicaps, Knight recorded 47:55 to win by a minute and three quarters over the hilly five-mile course.

In second place, Alex Hofmann was three and a half minutes inside his handicap with 34:17 and he finished forty seconds clear of Mark Gent who was third in 37:58. In fourth place and first woman was Laura Andrade, twenty-three seconds behind Gent in 38:31.

Back in seventh place there was a performance of particular significance in the twenty-nine year history of the event, as Allan Lee recorded the best ever age-related score of 81.46 with a time of 28:14. Apart from Lee himself, only one other runner has ever run faster over the course, when Lyndon Collins set what was then a course record 28:10 in July 1990. There was also a fine performance from the fastest woman on the day, as Heather Fitzmaurice, albeit back in thirteenth place, ran 35:46 for the best age-related female performance on the course for eight years.

David Lobley, who despite beating his handicap was only sixteenth on the day, continues to lead the series on tiebreak ahead of Andrew Mead who missed the July race. Andy Ashlee stays in third despite finishing back in 25th place in this seventh race of twelve.

The eighth race of the 2018 series, the last before the series returns to Sunday mornings for the winter, is over the alternate seven mile course. It starts from the Sevenoaks School track at 7 pm on Tuesday 7 August. Newcomers are very welcome to come and run.
