Neil Haggertay repeated his success in the previous race to win the penultimate contest of the 2017 Sevenoaks AC Handicap Series. In bright, windy conditions over the hilly five-mile course, Haggertay ran steadily to overtake early leader Sylvia Lewis and then held on for a narrow eleven-second victory in a time of 50:33.

Sylvia Lewis was still well clear in second place until fast-finishing Andrew Milne suddenly appeared on the track and just pipped Lewis on the line after a blistering final 400 metres. That gave Milne second place in the fastest time of the day of 33:24, while Lewis got easily her best score of the year in third place with 51:34. No runners beat their handicaps on the day, but with Annabelle Milne the fastest woman on the day with 42:30, a record of sorts was set: the first time the fastest male and female times in a single race have been set by a couple.

Simon Hallpike finished in fourth place, six seconds behind Lewis with 39:40, and it was enough to move him up to third place in the series, level on eighteen points with second-placed Andrew Hutchinson. Chris Desmond still leads the series, as he has done since May, with 17 points, while two runners are just behind with nineteen points. They are Paul Smith moving up to fourth after finishing fifth on the day in 42:27, and Jim Fitzmaurice. As well as these, at least a dozen other runners can still win the series trophy or at least finish in the minor placings.

The series is now finely poised with only one race remaining and both the trophy and the minor placings still up for grabs. All will be determined at the final race of the 2017 series, which is over the alternate seven mile course. It starts from the Sevenoaks School track at 9 am on Sunday 17 December. Newcomers are very welcome to come and run.
