Rosie Draper led from start to finish in the ninth stage race of the Sevenoaks AC 2010
handicap series. Starting first in bright and breezy conditions, Draper enjoyed a solo run over the hilly five mile course
until approaching the last two hundred metres when she could see a chasing group across the Sevenoaks School track.
By that time there was no chance of her being caught and she finished 31 seconds clear in 49:47. In the process, Draper
was one of only two athletes to beat their handicaps on the day, in her case by over a minute.
The other runner to beat his handicap was Andrew Mead who also improved his personal best for the course as he zipped round in 30:58. This was the fastest time of the day as Mead prevailed over several of the other fast handicap runners who started close together at the rear of the field. Three of these athletes occupied the next three places at the finish, as Chris Desmond sauntered the final hundred metres to third in 31:33, Keith Dowson was three seconds behind in fourth in 31:56, and David Lee was another four seconds back in 31:50. Particularly impressive in sixth place was Jim Fitzmaurice, six seconds behind Lee in 40:36. The 68-year-old ran the Kent Coastal Marathon only seven days before but still managed to unleash a blistering finish over the last mile which pulled him clear of the chasing runners. Back in tenth place, Fitzmaurice's daughter Heather was the fastest woman on the day with 33:53. Despite only managing fifteenth place on the day, Rob Carr remains in the series lead with 10 points. However, both Andrew Mead and Chris Desmond improved their series positions with Mead moving up to second place on 13 points and Desmond third with 15. With three-quarters of the series completed, however, the competition is still wide open. The full table after nine races in the twelve race series reads: 1. Rob Carr 10pts; 2. Andrew Mead 13; 3.
