About the Grand Prix:            The Grand Prix uses performance tables produced by World Masters Athletics which enable performances for any event and age of competitor to be fairly compared. These tables are based on the world best times or distances either actually recorded or calculated for each age between 8 and 100 years for every recognised track and field event.

Because they provide a world standard for each event at each age they enable each performance by an athlete, male or female, junior or senior, to be compared with the recognised world best for their age and expressed as a percentage. For example, a 17 year old male sprinter runs 13.5s for 100m and the Age Graded Tables give the world best time as 10.16s for this age. The age graded percentage is calculated as 10.16/13.5 x 100% or 75.3%. We as a Club use these tables for calculating the Grand Prix scores for our three Grand Prix competitions – Junior GP, Road Race GP and Senior Track & Field GP.

2008 ROAD RACE GRAND PRIX

John Denyer steals title at the death

John Denyer has won his first club Road Race Grand Prix with a late surge of results in December. Geoff Vine, Chris Desmond and David Ives have all competed for the lead throughout the year but a late push by John Denyer in the final weeks when he ran two races proved to be crucial and saw him move clear at the top of the table for the first time. John started the year in good form and produced his best result in January at the Canterbury 10 where he ran 64.01 for a 85.1% score and after a period out with illness returned in the summer to record more 80+% scores in the Larkfield 10k and London Tri Relay. By November Geoff Vine had moved to the top of the table and into December John still required two more races to achieve six qualifying scores. This he achieved with 80+% scores at both the Crook Log 5k and Serpentine 5k in December and moved to the top of the table for the first time.

Finishing in second place was Geoff Vine who had an excellent second half of the year with a string of 78+% scores. The Serpentine 5k proved to be a profitable hunting ground for Geoff where he produced excellent performances in November and December with a best of 20.30 to record his best score of 78.9% in December. Chris Desmond finished in third place with fine performances in the first half of the year and a best score of 79.7% in the Whitstable 10k when he ran 37.02.

In the Most Improved Category there were a number of high scores and Erik Folkesson was rewarded for a very consistent year and first place with an improved score of 22.1. Erik produced his highest score of 68.3% at both the Paddock Wood Half Marathon and the Ashford 10k. Reflecting his excellent year Geoff Vine matched his second place in the main competition with an improved score of 15.8 for second place in this category. In third place was last years’ winner Carol Beadle who showed her continued improvement with an improved score of 15.4. Unfortunately Carol ended the year on the injury list with shin splints which has delayed her start to the 2009 programme.

How Are The Grand Prix WMA % Scores Calculated?

The World Masters Athletics (WMA), formerly World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA), Age Graded Tables first published in 1989 and updated in 2006, provide the basis for comparing athletic performances for different ages, genders, and between different events.

These tables are based on the world best times or distances either actually recorded or calculated for each age between 8 and 100 years for every recognised track and field and road race event.

There are now on-line calculators for calculating a WMA score for any performance. The link below takes you to the one we use, instructions are provided – all you need to do is select the event, enter your performance, gender and age and the calculator will provide your % score.

Here is a link to the WMA on-line calculator of age graded scores. All you will need to do is enter the event, your age and performance.

As the tables do not include the 7 mile distance, SAC - organiser of the Sevenoaks Seven - has its own (road only) calculator.
