NB. The Junior GP will this year be based on the best 6 performances rather than the best 3.
2009 Junior Grand Prix – Dominic Brown takes the Title

To encourage the juniors to compete more regularly, this year the junior coaches decided that the Grand Prix competition should be based on the best six performances of each athlete and 15 year old Dominic Brown has risen to the challenge to become the 2009 Junior Grand Prix title holder. Dominic has produced a string of excellent performances that have exceeded the very good 80% Grand Prix score level - see the explanation below on how the Grand Prix scores are calculated. His best performance came in the 800m at Crawley in July where his time of 2min 11.2 sec converted into a Grand Prix score of 84.8%.

In second place in the competition was 13 year old Simone Baxter. Simone, the winner of the Grand Prix for the last two years, has again produced some very good sprinting performances with her best Grand Prix score of 83.5 being achieved with a 10.7sec 75m at Deangate.

In third place for the second year was 14 year old Tabitha Adams who has run well over 800m several times during the summer to achieve a Grand Prix best score of 82.9% with a time of 2min 30.8sec at Canterbury in June.

2009 TRACK & FIELD GRAND PRIX

The 2009 club Track & Field Grand Prix competition has been dominated by for the seventh year by Geoff Kitchener. Although fewer club members compete on the track than the road, the standard is high and it now requires consistent Grand Prix scores in the mid 80%’s to finish in the first three places of the competition. Geoff Kitchener, competing this year for the final season as an M55, ran out the very clear winner with an aggregate score for his best three performances some 15 points ahead of his nearest rival. Geoff produced his best performances indoors over 60m where he twice ran 8.56sec to achieve a Grand Prix score of 89.7% early in the year as an M55, but surpassed this in December when having just entered the ranks of an M60 he ran 8.57sec to register a GP score of 90.3%.

In second place was Jim Duffill who returned to top form after being prevented from competing on the track in 2008 because of injury. Jim produced some excellent performances over 1500 and 3000m with his best Grand Prix score of 86% resulting from a fine time of 4min 47.8sec in the 1500m at Ashford in the SCVAC League in June.

In third place was John Denyer who achieved his best scores over 1500m, with his best coming in the Masters Inter Area Match in August where, representing Southern Counties as an M60, he ran 5min 11.3sec to record a Grand Prix score of 85%.

1.         Geoff Kitchener         269.7
2.         Jim Duffill                   254.7
3.         John Denyer              252.8

In the Most Improved Category Geoff Kitchener was also the winner with an improved score of 5.9 points. In second place was Rob Peers who has been a key member of the SCVAC Kent League team competing in a range of events on the track and in the field to achieve an improved score of 4.2 points. In third place was John Denyer with an improvement of 3.0 points.

2009 ROAD RACE GRAND PRIX

M60’s Dominate - John Denyer 1st & Geoff Vine 2nd for Second Year

The 2009 Road Race Grand Prix has been dominated by the club M60 super vets with John Denyer taking 1st place and Geoff Vine 2nd place, both for the second year running. However, the big story of the year is Richard Pitcairn-Knowles returning to competition and improving throughout the year to take third place as an M75. With his impressive longevity Richard is an inspiration to us all.

John’s good form has continued through the year and he has also finished as 2nd M60 in the Kent Road Race GP. His best performance came in the Harvel 5 where he ran 31.48 for an 84.2% score and he also achieved 83.6% with a 39.56 10k at Leamington Spa. Geoff has run consistently well all year with his best performance at the Sidcup 10 where he ran 70.25 for a 78.8% score. He has backed this up with some consistent performances at the Serpentine 5k with times of 20.53 and 20.54 for scores of 78.1 and 77.4. After returning to competition as an M75, Richard has improved through the year like a vintage wine with his two best performances coming at the Serpentine 5k where he ran a best of 24.48 (77.8%) – one of a number of new Club Bests as an M75.

The Most Improved Category has brought a new winner to the fore with Maryanne Aitken recording an improved score of 8.8 over her six best races. Maryanne favours the longer distances and recorded her best performances at the Thanet 10 and Paddock Wood Half Marathon. Her ambition this year is to improve her Marathon time so we can expect her to be doing well in the coming year. In 2nd place was John Denyer with an improvement of 6.5, followed in 3rd place by Rob Johnson with an improvement of 0.3 and a best performance at the Cliffe Woods 10k.

In addition to the 2009 top finishers, in 2010 we can expect several athletes to challenge for honours including Pauline Dalton now that she has recovered from foot surgery, and Geoff Kitchener who finished the year strongly and has the added incentive of competing as a young M60.

How Are The Grand Prix WMA % Scores Calculated?

The World Masters Athletics (WMA), formerly World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA), Age Graded Tables first published in 1989 and updated in 2006, provide the basis for comparing athletic performances for different ages, genders, and between different events.

These tables are based on the world best times or distances either actually recorded or calculated for each age between 8 and 100 years for every recognised track and field and road race event.

Because they provide a world standard for each event at each age they enable each performance by an athlete, male or female, junior or senior, to be compared with the recognised world best for their age and expressed as a percentage.

For example, a 17 year old male sprinter runs 13.5s for 100m and the Age Graded Tables give the world best time as 10.16s for this age. The age graded percentage is calculated as 10.16/13.5 x 100% or 75.3%. We as a Club use these tables for calculating the Grand Prix scores for our three Grand Prix competitions – Junior GP, Road Race GP and Senior Track & Field GP.

There are now on-line calculators for calculating a WMA score for any performance. The link below takes you to the one we use, instructions are provided – all you need to do is select the event, enter your performance, gender and age and the calculator will provide your % score.

Here is a link to the WMA on-line calculator of age graded scores. All you will need to do is enter the event, your age and performance.

As the tables do not include the 7 mile distance, SAC - organiser of the Sevenoaks Seven - has its own (road only) calculator.
