Sevenoaks AC Handicap July 2020

Jim Knight won the seventh race of the Sevenoaks AC 2020 handicap series to make it two in a row for the club's Newsletter editor. In his best run since 2008, 69-year-old Knight, who these days runs with two titanium replacement hips, beat his handicap by ninety-nine seconds in a time of 46:41 for a virtual 5-mile race in which three other runners were also under their targets.

John Denyer continued his return from injury with a fine run in second place. Denyer beat his handicap by seventy seconds with 41:30, improving his five-mile time by ninety-seven seconds in less than two months. In third place, Andrew Mead beat his handicap by over half a minute with 32:48, while Dan Witt was fourteen seconds under his handicap in fourth place in 33:46.

The first and fastest woman in the race was series leader Lucy Wilkes, who finished sixth in 45:55, while Andrew Mead was the fastest runner overall, with his 32:48 being his best time in a five-mile handicap for four years.

Although Andrew Mead's third place in the race improved his series score slightly to 15 points, he drops from second to fourth in the series. And Jim Knight's second win in succession is only enough to keep him in third place in the series with 14. But Dan Witt's fourth scoring run means he comes straight in to second place with 13 points. Lucy Wilkes continues to lead the series with 10 points, but after seven races, the pack is starting to close in.

The eighth race of the 2020 series is also a virtual event, this time over the alternate seven mile distance. Any run of around 11k/7M any time in August can be submitted. The details are here. Handicaps and targets for regulars are here. Newcomers are also very welcome to submit entries.
