Heather Fitzmaurice ran her fastest time for ten years over the seven mile course to win the eighth race of the Sevenoaks AC 2025 handicap series with a time of 53:46 in fine but breezy conditions. Fitzmaurice also beat her handicap by eighty-four seconds and recorded her best age-graded score for the course.
Just over a minute behind in second place, series leader Jon Maxim overtook early race leader Simon Hallpike on the run-in to the track to set a personal best for the course of 51:33. That beat his handicap as well as setting the fastest time of the day. Hallpike finished twenty-one seconds back in third in 59:04.
With just one race remaining in the series, Heather Fitzmaurice moves up to second place, one point ahead of Chris Desmond and one point behind leader Jon Maxim. Fitzmaurice and Desmond are the only runners who can stop Maxim from winning the series trophy, which Fitzmaurice could do by winning the final race. Desmond would also need to win the last race to be level on points, but he would then need a better tiebreak score. As the tiebreak is based on the number of other competitors beaten in the runners' scoring races, he would need a big turnout for the final event. Of course Jon Maxim could make sure of the trophy by winning the last race himself.
The ninth and final race of the 2025 series is over the alternate five mile distance. It starts from the Sevenoaks School running track at 08:30 on Sunday 7th September. It will also be the last ever handicap race in the current format, which has run more or less uninterrupted since the 1980s. Details are here. Handicaps and targets for regulars are here. Newcomers are also very welcome to come and take part.
