Racing for Sevenoaks

Competitive events

Race every weekend or never race at all. If you do want to compete, there is a lot to join in with — on the road, over the country and on the track.

Club training is the heart of Sevenoaks AC. Racing is extra, and optional. Pull on a vest when you fancy it and you are scoring for the club as well as for yourself.

Fixtures sit on the calendar. The short version of each series is also on Events. This page is the fuller picture: how the leagues work, who to talk to, and how the club Grand Prix is scored.

KFL

Kent Fitness League

The Kent Fitness League is a winter cross country series for senior non-elite club runners, usually consisting of seven races between November and February. Courses are predominantly off road and are generally around 5–6 miles, with races taking place on Sunday mornings at venues across Kent.

Runners must be registered with England Athletics through a participating club and be aged 17 or over. The league has an upper performance limit, meaning faster athletes who meet specified race-time standards are not eligible to compete.

Clubs can enter any number of runners. For the combined team competition, eight men and five women score, with the scoring team required to include runners from specified veteran age groups. There are also separate men’s and women’s team competitions and individual standings across a range of age categories.

In a standard seven-race season, an individual runner’s best five results count towards the final standings.

Sevenoaks AC hosts one of the league fixtures each season at Knole Park.

Kent League

Kent XC League

The Kent XC League is organised by the Kent County Athletics Association and takes place during the autumn and winter. Races are held on Saturdays at cross country venues around Kent, with separate races for different age groups from juniors through to senior men and women.

Unlike the Kent Fitness League, there is no upper performance limit, so the league includes runners competing at county level as well as club athletes.

Clubs may enter any number of runners. In the senior competitions, the first three women and first four men from each club score for the main team competitions, with additional team competitions using the first six women and first twelve men.

Individual league positions are calculated across the season, taking into account the number of races completed and finishing positions.

Kent GP

Kent Grand Prix

The Kent Grand Prix is a season-long series of 10 road races across Kent, covering a range of distances from 5 miles and 10K to half marathon and beyond. Sevenoaks AC members are automatically eligible to score in both the individual and club competitions.

Runners do not need to complete the whole series. An individual’s best six results count towards the final standings, with separate age categories. In the team competition, the club’s best eight rounds count, with the first six Sevenoaks men and first four Sevenoaks women scoring for the club at each race.

To be included in the results, members should enter each race as an affiliated Sevenoaks AC runner. Full race dates, results and current standings are published throughout the season.

Kent Champs

County Championships

The Kent County Championships are organised by the Kent County Athletics Association and take place through the year on the road, over the country and on the track. Some road championships also count as Kent Grand Prix fixtures.

Athletes usually need to be Kent-qualified to be eligible for individual championship medals, and should enter as a Sevenoaks AC runner. There are championships for juniors, seniors and masters, with individual and team awards in a range of age categories.

Fixtures are listed on the club calendar throughout the season.

Track & field

Track & Field

The club’s men’s and women’s teams compete in the Kent division of the Southern Counties Veterans Athletic Club track and field league. Matches are held on Monday or Friday evenings in summer at tracks around Kent, for athletes over 35. The mix of ability runs from the competitive to the social, so nobody need feel out of place.

There are also evening open graded meetings at Tonbridge through the summer, plus Kent Masters championships. Thursday and Sunday track sessions at Sevenoaks School are the usual way in.

All track and field performances can count towards the club’s own track-and-field Grand Prix, with scores age-graded so athletes of different ages can be compared fairly.

Open race

Open Road Races

Open road races sit outside the Kent leagues: local 5ks, 10ks, 10 milers, halves, trails and parkrun, plus whatever members are training for. The club flags plenty on the calendar.

There is no obligation to race. If you do, enter as an affiliated Sevenoaks AC runner and wear club colours. Road performances can still count towards the club Grand Prix.

The club Grand Prix

Alongside the Kent leagues, Sevenoaks runs its own Grand Prix. Every race performance can count. Scores use World Masters Athletics age-graded tables, so a 17-year-old sprinter and a 70-year-old on the road can be compared fairly: your time or distance is turned into a percentage of the world standard for your age and event.

There are three competitions: a junior Grand Prix, a road Grand Prix (best six scores) and a senior track-and-field Grand Prix (best three). There is also a team Grand Prix, three athletes scoring together.
